SUSTAINABLE BARISTA CHAMPIONSHIP
Climate Wave Coffee Research Institute & Academy is honored to introduce a thoughtful competition that recognizes baristas who excel not only in their craft, but also in their commitment to sustainable practices. Drawing from our Climate Wave Coffee Solutions Framework, this annual championship celebrates those who understand that true excellence in coffee comes from both skill and environmental stewardship.

COMPETITION FORMAT
A ONE-DAY INTENSIVE COMPETITION WITH FOCUSED EVALUATION OF SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
​Each barista gets 30 minutes total
​

10 minutes for setup

15 minutes for performance - Two Servings Required

First Serving: 8oz latte with latte art using a single shot espresso. Competitors may pull a double shot and split it to create two 8oz lattes for the judges.

Second Serving: Manual brewing method of choice, served black. Each judge receives a 6–8oz serving. Competitors may batch brew for both judges simultaneously and split the brew between them.

BARISTA SELECTION PROCESS
Creating an Inclusive and Affordable Platform for Sustainable Coffee Excellence
At Climate Wave Coffee Research Institute & Academy, we believe that sustainable coffee practices should be accessible to all passionate baristas. To embody this commitment, we've designed the Sustainable Barista Championship to be completely free for selected competitors. While we require a refundable deposit to ensure commitment, there are no participation fees, making the championship inclusive and accessible to baristas from all backgrounds who share our vision for sustainable coffee practices.

Our selection process focuses on the barista's dedication to sustainability, technical skills, and their vision for environmental stewardship in the coffee industry. We welcome applications from both experienced competition baristas and those new to the competitive scene.

To be eligible for the Sustainable Barista Championship, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Must be currently working as a barista or have prior barista experience

Must be willing and able to attend the full-day competition in 2025, in Victoria, BC

Must be able to provide a refundable $100 deposit if selected
-
Must be prepared to submit detailed documentation about coffee and brewing methods two week before competition

Note: The championship welcomes both experienced competition baristas and those new to the competitive scene. There are no minimum years of experience required, as we value dedication to sustainability and passion for coffee craft.
